Membership is open to the following:

• Anyone who lives, works or worships in Vermont's Orange or Washington Counties (and their families).
• Select Employee Groups and family members.
• Employees of businesses under contract with the National Life Insurance Company, or employees of tenants of National Life who work on National Life premises, as may be approved by the Board.

In January, 1952, a credit union for National Life Employees was organized and sponsored by the National Life Recreation Association. On February 18, 1952, National Life Employees Credit Union was granted a charter by the State of Vermont.

Through the years, the credit union continued to add products and services and, in 1999, was granted a Community Charter, allowing expansion of the field of membership to include anyone who lives or works in Washington County. In 2002, the expansion included Orange County and the name was changed to Granite Hills Credit Union. On May 1, 2002 we changed our name to Granite Hills Credit Union to better reflect the people and communities we serve.

On October 14, 2008 we built and moved to our new main office at 328 North Main Street in downtown Barre, while maintaining the current location in Montpelier as a reconfigured satellite branch.

We have enjoyed helping people fulfill their dreams of new cars, homes, and much more. We have made interesting loans for an airplane, a crane, a semi-truck and even a horse! In the early years, we would accept jewelry, paper stock or life insurance policies as collateral. We feel our future is bright and look forward to introducing new services and programs to our members – including innovative car buying programs, enhanced online banking, relationship account packages and more!
